New Guinea Gold No Liability
In January 1927, New Guinea Gold No Liability was formed to fly between the costal town of Salamaua and the new goldfields in the Mandated Terrirory of New Guinea. Prior to this people had a ten-day trek through dense jungle and 4000 foot high mountains populated by cannibals!
A De Havilland D.H.37 began regular services on 18 May 1927 from a coastal airstrip at Lae and flying inland to Wau airstrip. This was a dangerous flight and Wau airstrip at the goldmines was no better at an altitude of 3700 feet and with a 4 degree runway slope. The carrier charged 25 pounds for the journey but this 45 minute flight replaced ten days in the jungle!
By 1928 a Mining Ordinance denied any 'no liability' companies trading in the gold fields so the carrier changed to a limited company so it could continue trading. It became Guinea Airways Limited.
